Seattle Police are investigating the death and carjacking of an 80-year-old dog walker near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard East and East Harrison Street.

Around 9:55 a.m., the victim, a dogwalker, fought the suspect and was dragged as the suspect fled, police said.

When police arrived, the victim was lying in the middle of the street getting CPR by a bystander. When Seattle Fire arrived, they continued medical treatment but were unsuccessful.

Police and several residents told KIRO 7 crews that several bystanders attempted to stop the suspect from driving off.

“A guy going north had a baseball bat and he was yelling, “Get out of the car! Get out of the car!,’” said Bonita Bilton, who was driving by when it happened. “He broke the glass.”

The suspect continued to drive and hit at least one car as he fled.

“I was trying to open my phone to call 911 and I was so nervous I couldn’t even unlock my phone,” Bilton said.

Police said the suspect left in the stolen car and are actively searching.

Neighbors told KIRO 7 crews that several dogs went running from the scene. One resident said she caught one of the dogs and took it to an emergency veterinarian where staff successfully scanned a microchip.

Neighbors say the victim ‘Ruth’ was a beloved part of the community who had been walking dogs for decades.

“I feel so bad for her like she’s trying to protect other people’s animals like it’s just not fair,” said neighbor Laura Dynan.

Charlene Smith is a fellow dog walker who has known Ruth for over 30 years.

“She was kind person, jolly, the dogs absolutely adored her and so did the people that knew her,” said Smith. “And she was an extremely compassionate person who had a very high level of care for animals, and the people who love their animals. She was very trustable and honorable.”

Several neighbors said this incident is one too many.

“Everyone feels unsafe,” said Daphne Romero, recounting another recent violent incident at her workplace less than a mile away. “Last week we had a shooting in our store. Since we moved to this neighborhood, I’ve had my car stolen twice.”

Romero said her son is begging her to leave Seattle.

Mark Clouse, who also lives nearby, told KIRO 7 crews that he recently got a license to carry a weapon concealed.

“I think it’s just to try to be prepared,” he said.

At 3:05 SPD responded to a report from Seattle Animal Control that a dead dog was located in the Brighton Playfield near the 3900 block of South Juneau Street.

Responding officers say they located the stolen vehicle nearby. Police are still searching for the suspect.

Seattle Police announced Wednesday that they arrested a man in connection to the deadly carjacking of a dog walker in Seattle.

In a news conference, they identified him as 48-year-old Jahmed Haynes.

Officers lifted a fingerprint off the woman’s phone and identified him.

When they arrested him, police said he had a knife on him with blood still on it, as well as the keys to Ruth Dalton’s car.

In Wednesday’s news conference, Seattle Police also mentioned that Haynes has eight prior felonies and a history of mental health issues.

Seattle police said around 9:55 a.m. Tuesday Haynes tried to get into the passenger side of Dalton’s car near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard East and East Harrison Street.

She had several dogs in the car with her at the time.

Officers said there was a struggle of some kind and the car went up onto a planter, as Haynes pulled Dalton out of the car.

A bystander tried to intervene, but Hayes reportedly pulled a knife on him.

Officers said the man came back with a bat to try and help save her, but the car backed up, crashing into several cars and hitting Dalton before speeding away.

Dalton’s dog was still inside the car.

Police say Haynes drove to Brighton and killed the dog. Its body was found at the playfield near the 3900 block of South Juneau Street.

Officers located the stolen car nearby.

Seattle Police said Haynes will be facing a number of charges including murder, theft and animal abuse.

An 80-year-old grandmother in Washington state died during a carjacking this week as she struggled to protect two dogs, and a 48-year-old suspect is in custody for what police are calling a senseless killing.

The Seattle Police Department identified the victim as Ruth Dalton, a local dog walker. One dog in the car with her at the time belonged to Dalton and was later found fatally stabbed, police Deputy Chief Eric Barden said during a press conference Wednesday.

The suspect was arrested later that night by a SWAT team, Barden said, and when captured, he was carrying a bloody knife and the keys to Dalton’s Subaru.

“This is a tragic and horrific incident,” Barden said. “(Dalton was) participating vibrantly in her community... that was snatched from her and from her family and her friends and the community by virtue of this senseless violence.”

Police identified the homicide suspect to USA TODAY as Jahmed K. Haynes, of Seattle.

A motive in the killings was not immediately known, but police told USA TODAY Haynes has eight prior criminal convictions including a vehicular homicide in 1993, and Barden said the suspect has a history of mental health issues.

Seattle Police detectives are searching for the suspect who carjacked an 80-year-old dog walker, dragging her, then running over her with her own car Tuesday morning.

Just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, police responded to a neighborhood in Seattle for reports of a carjacking.

When officers arrived, they located a woman in her 80s receiving CPR from a bystander.

Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead, officials said.

Police determined the woman was a neighborhood dog walker.

During the carjacking and struggle, she was dragged by her car and fatally injured. Multiple bystanders attempted to intervene, but they were unsuccessful.

Several neighbors spoke to FOX 13 and described the harrowing incident.

"I heard some commotion and screaming. It sounded like a crash," Laura Dynan, a neighbor who witnessed the carjacking, told FOX 13.

Dynan told police she was inside her house when she heard the struggle between the dog walker and the man.

"I basically got out of my front door before I realized there were dogs running down the street and screaming," Dynan said.

Dynan added that by the time she was able to get outside, the suspect was already at the wheel of the victim's blue SUV.

FOX 13 reported that Dynan saw the suspect run over the woman with her SUV, and as she lay wounded in the street, a man was chasing after the carjacker with what she thought looked like a baseball bat.

"He was a plumber working in the neighborhood who happened to have a bat on him who was trying to save her," Dynan said.

Dynan said the plumber tried to smash out the back window of the stolen SUV and damaged the front windshield, freeing some of the dogs inside.

"The guy with the bat was batting out all the windows. There were dogs leaping out. It was just chaos," Dynan recalled. "He had her car, he had those dogs. There was no reason to run her over."

Neighbors told FOX 13 the suspect also smashed into vehicles parked on the street.

The suspect fled the area in her stolen vehicle and was not located.

Later in the afternoon, police responded to a report that a dead dog had been found with stab wounds near a blue recycling bin in a park. The stolen SUV was also located near the dead dog and was abandoned, police said.

Seattle Police are actively searching for the suspects, and no arrests have been made.

Dynan believes the woman likely died trying to save the pets that were in her care.

"All the dogs that were in the car were not hers. They were other people’s in the neighborhood, and she was trying to protect them, I’m sure," Dynan said.

Anyone with information leading to the suspect's whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Seattle Police Department.
