Tear gas usage at the border by year
(because border patrol keeps records):
2012: 26 times
2013: 27 times
2014: 15 times
2015: 8 times
2016: 3 times
2017: 18 times

Why is 2018 the only time the media has freaked out about it?

Context is everything. The number of times teargas has been used is nonsequitur. The circumstances in which it was used and whether there was just cause for its use or for the manner in which it was used is the real issue. This isn't to say use of teargas recently was not justified. It IS to say questions as to whether it was are valid and should be covered in news media reports. That issue seems to have been at the center of most coverage I've seen.

When are we going to STOP using it in situations like this?

Just because something was done in the past, that makes no justification
for doing it again and again and again and ........

They are obviously not indicting the the use of tear gas - that can be a
debate - they are indicting your, and your ilk's, hypocrisy.

First thing here is that you need to tell us what YOU would implement
as the method to stop a rush of people to a border crossing or any
other part of a border?
First thing you need here is to tell us why we need to stop people at the
border.
You are clearly in a small minority if you think
the USA should allow UNLIMITED and uncontrolled
migration into our country.

Even the majority of your fellow Democrats
think that would be BAD!

What does the plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty read?

And if you think it bad, why are you not advocating to close the borders
between the States?

And do note, we're talking about human beings and not Orcs or Klingons.

No, it's not coping - it's deliberately making the problem worse. Coping
with the problem would be sending more Case Workers and Judges to the
border to handle the traffic.

That's another way to cope with the problem.
Another way is to revoke US asylum laws.

The solution is to jail the Americans who destablised central
American countries. That major concern is being ignored.

Taking into the USA a considerable number of immigrants
each year legally is a very good and benificial fact.
It helps them and it helps us as a nation.

But losing control of our borders for an unlimited
number of them and without protections on who they
are is a very bad idea.

My grandmother was one welcomed in 1904. It helped
her, and helped with the needs of the USA.
A couple of years later, immigration from her
country was almost totally shut off. There were
no riots, mass marches, or massive protests.

With housing shortages, we don't need anybody more moving
in upon us, neither from other countries nor other states.

There is no overall housing shortage in the US. Many neighborhoods and
even whole towns sit empty.

Boarded up unliveable government housing projects.

Immigration puts pressure on local housing
and Oregon doesn't have empty housings except
for a few remote ghost towns.

And immigrants will refuse to live in empty towns.

There are 16,000 empty apartments in the Portland metro area alone:

Hillsboro has 6.4% vacancy rate (~7,000):

National Housing Study Confirms Portland's Tight Rental
Market. In this restrictive rental market, we are working to
counteract the effects of displacement so communities of color
and others traditionally left behind by the market to have
equitable access to desirable neighborhoods and housing
stability.
