With the slow collapse of current PRI government, it is opening the door
to a populist from the left, Andres Lopez-Obrador (Almo), in the
upcoming election. Gas prices, set by the government, has just been
raised from $3.03 to $3.13 a gallon. This is due to ever increasing
inflation. Where I live the gas actually comes from Texas, via a
pipeline. The unrest here is increasing, and the Mexican people could
take a dangerous chance and elect Almo in the next Presidential
election. He's a free everything guy, and might appeal to the millions
of workers that are being worked to death in US factories that were
brought from the rust belt to Mexico in the last 8 years.

So what about me? I can't vote, and by Mexican law can not even attend
a political rally. So my future is in the hands of the Mexican voter.
If Almo takes power, it could be bad for the 1/2 million American
ex-pats that live here. We may have to immigrate back to our homeland,
while illegal immigrants in the USA return to their homeland. This
would be from the pressure from Trump and to cash in on all the freebies
that Almo has promised Mexicans if he is elected President, and as
freebies for illegals in the USA dry up. After this transfer of
populations, there won't be a "dreamer" left in the USA, as they follow
their dreams to Mexico for their freebies.

Ancient Chinese proverb: may you live in interesting times.

What is the nearest 'big' city to where you live?

We have some in laws who live near Harlengen Tx.
(very southern part of Texas near coast, or near Brownsville).
They used to shop and use services regularly in Mexico,
but in last 2 years felt & saw great increase in crime,
extortion & threats.
Sad.

I am in Sonora on the sea of cortez, there is no cartel war here. The
tourists are not bothered at all here, they make too much money off of
them to screw that up. The army does have a presence here though, which
is good. It is not on a main drug trafficking route, but a lot of
migrants do pass through from central america headed to the land of the
free handout, the word does get around. Migrants in the past wanted
jobs, these are freeloaders. The central americans that want jobs find
jobs in Mexico, and Mexico is now tightening their immigration because a
lot of these jobs are now going to these people.

It has surprised me to hear of problems in areas from
Mazatlan and Alcopoco. But perhaps the stories
we have heard (inclucing last year at Cabo) were
overstated. Have a good New Year!

Major problems in Cabo, Mazatlan, Acapulco, would not go to any of those
places. Mazatlan, I remember was always a drug haven, went there in the
early 80's, saw a trailer park there that was filled with Americans that
were all heroin addicts, that lived there because of their habit.
Guaymas and north of there along the coast, it's ok.

What did you hear about Cabo last year? In November I did see a
increased presence of the Federales I haven't seen since 2010.

`-----------
There were 300 murders in cartel violence in Cabo last year. But
remember Chicago had 700+ drug related murders too (that are really an
extension of the cartel). The difference is that in cabo they use
military weapons like 40mm grenade launchers in their turf war.

The cartel war started when another cartel moved in on Cabo, in 2013.
It started when the head of the cartel there was assassinated at his
birthday party when one of the entertainment was dressed as a clown shot
the capo dead.

Slowly but surely, the cartel war has affected small mexican businesses
surrounding the tourist area. So if I was a tourist I would not venture
into the town, you would not be targeted but could be collateral damage
if you are sitting next to some cartel people when there is a hit. Not
likely, but possible. Tourist resorts and such, are usually off limits
to cartel violence, but around them anything can happen.

One time, I was riding my bike in the desert way out of the tourist area
where I live, and was confronted by Mexican Marines, weapons drawn,
wondering what I was doing. It ended agreeably when I explained I was
just getting some exercise, something that is foreign concept in Mexico.

So when I get out of the gingo zone, you have to be more on guard.
Opposite in the USA, where the urban zones are the war zones, and the
rural areas are safe. In Mexico it's the rural areas, is where the
cartel is, and the military.

I look for this in news sources but can't fine it. When you say Cabo -
you mean San Jose, Cabo San Lucas or both?

Be a man for the first time in yer life, and that doesn't mean strummin'
